BFGoodrich Tires announced today the 12 drivers who will make up the 2013 BFGoodrich Tires/Wide Open Excursions “Baja Challenge” (BC) race team that will compete in the 46th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 on Nov. 14-17.

As in previous years, BFGoodrich Tires will place several of its brand ambassadors alongside guests and a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Champion to take part in the most grueling desert race on the planet. This year, BFGoodrich Tires will have two entries with a total of 12 drivers looking to defend the BC class title.

Team BFGoodrich members included in this year’s running are made up of veteran racers and automotive experts – some new to the experience and others - wily veterans.

This year’s double BC buggy crew consists of Team BFGoodrich members Andrew Comrie-Picard, Terry Earwood, Brian Finch, Brad Lovell, Roger Lovell, Dan McKeever, Rich Minga, Kyle Tucker and John Williams. Included this year are Mike “Junior” Johnson of the Evolution Performance Driving School, Larry McRae of Poison Spyder Customs and our SCCA National Champion and returning Baja racer Chad Gilsinger.

Gilsinger recently won the Touring 3 (T3) class at the 50th SCCA Runoffs at Road America and for that won the most unique contingency award in club racing – a seat on the BFGoodrich Tires BC team. Gilsinger, who returns for his second Baja experience, will take himself out his Acura TL with BFGoodrich g-force R1-S tires and step into the custom built buggy on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires in Baja, as he looks to continue his on-road successes in the dirt.

Last year, the BFGoodrich team secured the win by nearly an hour with Hollywood TV producer Bud Brutsman, Tucker, Brad and Roger Lovell and two SCCA Runoff Champions- Luke Wilwert and Mike Crawford.

The all-star motorsports cast will take to the desert in the coming weeks to pre-run the course in the Wide Open Excursions race cars that will soon be put to the test.

The BFGoodrich Tires BC Challenge team will be among many teams in Baja riding on BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tires the exclusive tire of the entire Wide Open Excursion Baja Challenge class.

"We have doubled our efforts this year in putting together two of the most talented teams the challenge class has seen,” said Peter Calhoun, motorsports manager for BFGoodrich Tires. “Their collective experience in Baja as well as fabricating, engineering and racing makes for a unique and talented group looking to tackle what looks to be the toughest course in Baja 1000 recent memory."

The 2013 Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will start and finish in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico and run through a treacherous 900 miles. Trucks on BFGoodrich Tires have won the overall four-wheel title 55 times combined in the SCORE Baja 500 and 1000, including 25 of the past 27 years and a record stretch of 20 consecutive victories in the 1000 (1986–2005). More information about the ultimate desert race is available at www.score-international.com.

Wide Open Excursions provides "arrive and drive" seats for the SCORE Baja 1000, SCORE Baja 500 and for adventure tours. BFGoodrich tires have logged more than 4.5 million miles in Baja with Wide Open Excursions and the BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A tire and BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A tire are exclusive tires for the Baja Challenge race cars. More information on the Wide Open Excursions is available at www.wideopenbaja.com.

He won the 2000 Legends Car National Championship, has competed in Grand-Am KONI Sports Car Challenge events, lead the 2008 25 Hours of Thunderhill by a two-lap margin and most-recently captured the 2010 NASA Spec Miata National Championship.

*Rich Minga is equally at home on a Hollywood movie set or in the wilds of the Baja peninsula. He's an active guide with Wide Open Excursions, taking people out into the desert for the adventure of a lifetime. He's also a stunt driver and coordinator for film and television.

*Kyle Tucker is owner of Detroit Speed Engineering and a veteran of the Baja 1000. Tucker was an engineer in Detroit before heading south to open Detroit Speed and Engineering with his wife Stacy. The pair set up shop in the heart of stock car racing country where they design, fabricate and install modern engineering for classic muscle cars.

*John Williams is a long time off-road driving enthusiast and competitive racer. He first hit the scene competing heavily in rock crawling. Since then he's expanded into other segments of off-road competition, racing in the Baja 1000. Now he is currently the Off-Road Operations Manager at Miller Motorsports Park. He oversees a number of programs ranging from vehicle and product testing to the ins and outs of the Off-Road Driving School.

AYER, Mass. (July 24, 2013) – Billy Davis, of New Haven, Conn., was the last driver standing after winning Sunday’s Evolution Super Shootout, concluding last weekend’s Tire Rack® SCCA Solo Match Tour event.

The Evolution Super Shootout presented by BFGoodrich Tires used class runs from Saturday to set the first 32 qualifiers in the bracket. Once the top 32 drivers were seeded, a 16-driver Last Chance Qualifier bracket was set based on indexed times from an additional four runs. Finally, the last 16 positions were filled with the top eight Ladies Class finishers, plus an additional eight drivers pulled from a random drawing – the one remaining opportunity to get into the field.

On Saturday, the threatening skies opened up, causing a torrential downpour only three miles away, but the course stayed dry for the 152 entrants. In contrast, Sunday’s weather was pleasant with temperatures in the mid to high 80s. Davis (C Street Prepared, MiataRoadster.com Mazda Miata) stood out early, setting Saturday’s fastest indexed time of 61.134 seconds. With that run, Davis was seeded as the top qualifier heading into Sunday’s bracket competition.

Driving a car that suffered exhaust damage when some rivets came lose in the first round of bracket competition causing a loss of power, Davis defeated Mark Daddio (Super Sport, Chevrolet Corvette) in the semifinals of Bracket A. In the bracket finals, Davis matched up with Tom O’Gorman (Super Street Modified, G-Fab Racing/Street Tires FTW!/Full Throttle Nissan 240SX), who took out G.J. Dixon (Super Sport, Grand Prix New York Porsche GT3) in the semis. In the bracket final, Davis wound up on top, earning a spot in the final four.

In Bracket B, Todd Kean (D Stock, G-Fab Racing Mini Cooper) took the semifinal win over Randolph Petschauer (Super Stock, Porsche GT3). On the other side of the bracket, P.J. Corrales (Street Modified, G-Fab Racing/240SXMotoring Nissan 240SX) defeated Justin Lau (B Stock, G-Fab Racing Honda S200) in the semis, earning the chance to meet Kean in the bracket finals. Making the most of the opportunity, Corrales beat Kean, earning a spot in the final bracket. Road Tire FWD class winner Brian Kuehl (Big Budget Racing Mazda3) beat Carl Wener (Street Modified, Perry Performance Misubishi Evo X) in the LCQ bracket semifinals. His eventual opponent, Russell Burckhard (G Stock, Ford ST), defeated Steve Seguis (B Street Prepared, JDV Motorsports/Evans Tuning Honda S200) en route to the bracket finals. Kuehl ended up with the victoryto advance.

In Bracket D, Stephanie Reeve (Ladies 2, G-Fab Racing Corvette Z06) topped Lana Tsurikova (Ladies 1, Lang Motorsport/Ace Performance BMW M3) in the semifinals. In the other semifinal matchup, David Gott (Street Touring Xtreme, G-Fab Racing/Tulley BMW of Manchester BMW 330CI edged out Paul Klein (D Stock, Infinity G35). Gott then went on to win the bracket final over Reeve, earning the fourth spot in the final bracket.

Each driver in the final-four bracket had the opportunity to make two initial runs. Corrales beat Gott, and then Davis took out Kuehl, setting up a final matchup between Corrales and Davis for all the marbles. In the end, Davis would emerge victorious. In the consolation runoff, Kuehl took the win, giving him third place in the competition. More information on The Tire Rack SCCA Ayers Solo Match Tour, including results, can be found here. MILWAUKEE, Wis. (July 16, 2013) – Tim Aro, of Glen Allen, Va., scored his first Evolution Super Shootout win Sunday, in bracket competition concluding The Tire Rack® SCCA Solo Match Tour at Miller Park.

The event was well attended by members of the Milwaukee Region, accounting for more than half of the 130 entries. The competitors enjoyed rain-free skies with temperatures in the upper 80s and high humidity.

Set up with Miller Park, the home of Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers, as a backdrop, the course had something for every driver. For those who like flat-out speed and g-force, there were sweepers and high-speed turns, and for drivers preferring more precision driving, there were plenty of low-speed turns and an eight-cone slalom section.

One of the highlights of the weekend came on Saturday afternoon. Following the official timed runs, there was extra time that allowed for some unofficial fun runs. With a quick tweak of the course, those who chose to participate were allowed to run the course backwards for nearly two hours. Each competitor that ran got some bang for their entry fee buck, scoring an additional six to 10 reverse-track attempts on the modified course. Aro (C Street Prepared, SoloPro Driving School Mazda Miata), the 2011 C Street Prepared National Champion, put himself in the catbird seat heading into Sunday’s competition after he set the fastest indexed time of 58.159 seconds during the qualifying runs.

On Sunday, Aro defeated Alek Tziortzis (Super Street Prepared, My Girls Chevrolet Corvette) in the semis of Bracket A, meeting with Jason Frank in the bracket final. Frank (Street Touring Compact, ProParts USA/Team Undercoat Racing Honda Civic) got to the bracket final by taking down class leader Andrew Canak (Street Touring Sport, Thanks Jay!!! Mazda Miata). In the bracket final, Aro beat Frank to get into the finals.

In Bracket B, Brandon Lavende (C Modified, Van Diemen RF85 FF) came from the middle of the field, getting the win over John Ma (Street Touring R, Calder Racing Mazda MX-5) in the semifinals. Lavende’s eventual opponent in the bracket final, Sam Makhlouf (Super Stock, Chevrolet Corvette), took the win against class top-qualifier Eric Thompson (E Street Prepared, MLS Motor Racing/SPS Solotime Chevrolet Camaro). In the bracket final, Lavende sent Makhlouf home, winning the showdown and earning a spot in the final bracket.

In the LCQ Bracket, Chris Fenter (Super Stock, Chevrolet Corvette) took the semifinal matchup against Chris Pruett (C Modified, -pru-/Calhoun Motorsports Swift DB1). On the other side of the bracket, Bart Hockerman (Street Touring Xtreme, BarTuned/Feal Suspension Subaru BRZ) pulled out a semifinal victory over Raleigh Boreen (C Street Prepared, AIM Tuning/Wizn By Racing Mazda Miata) by less than 0.1-second. However, Fenter put a stop to Hockerman’s momentum, taking the bracket and earning a spot in the finals.

Bracket D saw Hilary Anderson (Ladies 3, ProParts USA/Team Undercoat Racing Honda Civic Si) represent the ladies in the bracket final after she beat class rival Gretchen Austin (Ladies 3, Mazdaspeed/OSGiken Mazda RX8). She faced Marshall Moore (B Street Prepared, Badger Alloys/More Boys Racing Chevrolet Corvette) in the bracket final after Moore beat Allen Vitkus (B Street Prepared, City Chevrolet BMW M3) in the semis. Following the semifinal victory, Moore kept on rolling as he took the win over Anderson, earning the last of four finals positions.

In the opening rounds of the final four, each driver put down two runs. As a result, Lavende bested Moore to get to the final pairing with Aro, who beat Fenter. In the matchup for all the marbles, Aro won with a run that was more than one second faster than Lavende. Fenter took home third place after winning the consolation runoff against Moore, who also owns the car Fenter was driving. Fenter borrowed the Chevrolet Corvette for this event and was able to perform exceptionally well considering the lack of seat time and well-worn tires that were on the car.

As with previous Shootouts, the Peru Evolution Super Shotout has proven an incredible format for the SCCA's official car manufacturer, Mazda.

After an incredibly tough 64 car Shootout, the HighPressurePerformance / LudwigTune / Kaaz USA SSM RX-7 of Carter Thompson out of Murfreesboro, TN came out on top. Carter is the current SSM National Champion and showed why this weekend. Carter had to get past names like Elzinga, Montgomery and O'Gorman to make his way to the top of the A bracket in the Shootout and eventually beating Eric Campbell's smoking fast Campbell Disaster Kleenup International DSP BMW 330Ci.

The Indianapolis region SCCA did an incredible job at putting together an event with the help of the National staff this weekend. Raleigh Boreen's course was both challenging to drive, but easy to see fun to navigate. Watching the FP and DSP cars round the showcase sweeper was a great indication of how much fun everyone was having on course. Despite the constant threat of rain throughout the entire weekend, the grippy yet smooth concrete of the Peru site, the excellent Saturday welcome dinner and laid back feel of this event made everyone in attendance excited about this great new Solo format.

"The best feature is running the same course on Sunday- this way you can get right down to social stuff after competition on Saturday- no need to walk another course. I like that if you make the cut Saturday- you only really need to be in driving form by noon Sunday- another social bonus." noted Carl Wener, owner of the Perry Performance SM Mitsubishi Evolution X. "Watching A bracket in the shootout was real fun- I will stay for this again."

Brian Huber, running the his SS Chevrolet Corvette Z06 noted, "I liked the format of the Match (Tour). It had elements of the Tours and Pros and I like both types for various reasons. I drove probably the best I've driven in a while and the locals out there that know me noticed. THAT meant more to me than where I finished. I liked the fact that you didn't have to learn a new course and you could think about what you did the day before and improve on it."

The next Match Tour is set for Fountain, CO on June 22nd and 23rd. You can register by clicking here. Note that Pikes Peak International Hill Climb stars, including Paul Dallenbach and Cody Loveland will be on hand with their cars for meet'n'greet opportunities. This is sure to be one of the coolest SCCA National Solo events!
